Michael, a Further Education teacher who believes in corporal punishment in his domestic life, is taking his girlfriend Betty in hand, with a view to making her his wife. To this end he arranges a short break in an isolated cottage and tests her with such tasks as buying provisions for the week, cooking, and showing him respect. His challenges prove almost insurmountable for Betty, whose family background has not prepared her for such duties and who in addition is sorely lacking in common sense.On the surface, Betty is a wide-eyed innocent who would dearly like to live up to Michael's expectations. Her bungling attempts to please him and do his bidding are followed by even more hopeless attempts to undo her mistakes and cover her tracks. Every time she makes a mistake, and especially when she tries to cover it up or accompanies it with 'attitude', Michael punishes her with a spanking.
The spankings are firm rather than harsh, and Michael believes in 'making the punishment fit the crime' wherever possible so bad behaviour in the kitchen is met by a spanking with a wooden spoon or a saucepan, and childish behaviour leads Betty to be put in the diaper position.
Underneath her innocence, Betty has mixed feelings about her spankings. She genuinely tries to avoid Michael's displeasure or disappointment and she dislikes the pain of a spanking. However his domination of her – and sometimes the discipline itself - is a frequent cause of arousal and she makes no attempt to extricate herself from a relationship in which she is ultimately content.
